Golf Tip: Physical Limitations

Heading into the 2017 golf season, prepare yourself physically. I am not suggesting you become a “gym rat” and work out 5 days a week, although that can contribute to better health. Start stretching daily, see a physiotherapist or chiropractor and perhaps use a trainer if you are motivated to work out. In the left picture, the back swing has a spine tilting towards the target creating lower back issues and a ball flight, which is less than desirable. There are likely 2 possible reasons for this swing position, a lack of awareness or he has a physical dysfunction.

Don’t wait until spring to start on your golf game, let’s get it going now!

Give the gift of a golf lesson or a package of lessons this Christmas!

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Golf Year to you and your family.

Sincerely,
Glenn Boswell

Golf Tip: Kinematic Sequence

Sounds and reads like a very technical skill, doesn’t it? It really means energy in motion. Specifically in the golf swing, what moves first to last. If we look at the down swing, the order of movement is your bottom half (feet, legs and pelvis) move 1st, then the torso is 2nd, then your arms 3rd and lastly the club.

Screen Shot 2016-05-04 at 9.26.38 AM

Every tour player and good amateur golfer has this sequence of events, if something changes in the sequence, the shot can be very unpredictable. What causes the change in sequence?

1 – Awareness
2- Competency
3- Capacity

If you are aware of what to do, but your body does not allow you because of a lack of stability or mobility or both, then the answer is capacity.

That’s when you need a physical test screen to assess what the dysfunction is and get you going! I am booking right now for the AMM 3D assessment and physical screening, this provides you with what is happening to the ball flight, how it is happening and why it is happening. There are no assumptions made or opinions, just the factual feedback to help change your game.

If you are interested in using the same instruction technology that the LPGA, PGA & Champions Tour players use, please reserve a session with me. The AMM 3D (Advanced Motion Measurement) shows you exactly how your body moves in the golf swing!

We will cover how your body moves with the AMM 3D System, what the ball flight is doing using the Trackman Radar and give you a practice plan to improve.

The assessment will take 2 hours and change your game forever! Contact me today!

Golf Tip: Love Your Game

Your game includes the full swing, short game, putting, trouble shots, course strategy and your mental approach.  These are not in any particular order, but you will be doing all of them in any given game. This season, try to determine what your strengths are and where is the weakness.  If you are a decent ball striker, but you cannot chip the ball within 3 feet of the hole, that is where your focus should be.  If you struggle with 50 yard shots, don’t say “well I will not hit the approach shot to that distance, instead I will give myself a full swing from 100 yards”. Work on your short game and your putting average will improve.

Most golfers practice what they are good at, avoiding the weaker areas, hoping they will not encounter the weak areas on the golf course.  If you don’t know how to improve your weaker areas, come and see me. Let’s have more fun this golf season and love your game!

Putting and Ball Position

Do you give this the time and attention that’s needed when you practice? If not, here are some things to consider. Ball position is critical to become a better putter, period. This affects distance control and direction, which are the two main fundamentals in putting.

Most players position the ball in the middle of the stance, move the ball more to the left in your stance (right handed players). Approximately under your left nostril, when looking straight down. The next item to consider is the shaft angle, when you move the ball further to the left or under your left nostril, move your hands forward to keep the shaft properly aligned. The picture below shows correct impact and ball rotation from a good set up position and stroke. You might not be able to see this with the naked eye, but if you are in a poor ball or shaft angle position, you create too much flight & skid. This affects the distance control and direction.

I will be sending out the winter lesson program and details soon, register early for the most convenient times available.

How to Overcome Negative Thoughts On The Golf Course

negative-thinking-golfEveryone at every level of ability has encountered negative thoughts on the golf course or the range.  We know it is not productive, but we cannot seem to change it.  Here is a way to deal with this courtesy of April Clay.

Golfing out of your Mind Tip:

Let’s say Suzie has missed two key shots in a row and her tension and frustration are beginning to boil.  Thoughts of failure and embarrassment begin to enter her mind:  “you cannot blow this next shot, it will be all over.  What will people think?”

At this juncture, Suzie has a few choices.  If she follows this line of thinking and leaves her emotional and mental state unchecked things likely will not turn out well.  As her negative thoughts increase, so will her tension.  Her swing will change.  Doubt will enter.

But there is another choice.

If Suzie can recognize the rise of her frustration as normal she can work with it in a different way.  If she accepts and then redirects her thinking; “only this shot, what do I need to do, what is my approach?” she can help herself move back to the process of playing and away from a (emotional) judgement of her play.

Suzie’s routine for dealing with difficult emotions can be summarized like this:

Accept:  I feel what I feel because I care about what I’m doing.  That is ok, I am going to turn this emotion into a signal to change something up.

Assess:  I need to get back to my plan, my task.  What is the best way to play this next shot?  What approach can I commit to?

Commit:  Here a new pathway of thinking is identified.  Suzie, having experienced frustration before, knows the value in altering her pre shot routine:  align, target, easy swing are her key words.
